Get papers with Abstractus Desktop

Get the full text of a monitor's papers through your own browser access, at a pace you set.

How it works

Get papers in Abstractus Desktop gets the papers you marked Get. For each paper it looks for a free copy first (OpenAlex, Europe PMC, PMC, then Crossref). If there isn't one, it opens the paper in your browser and keeps the PDF your own access allows.

  • Install the Abstractus browser extension from the Chrome Web Store and connect it to the desktop app. The extension articles show how.
  • In the desktop app, open Get papers and choose a source: your library, a project or monitor, or a pasted list of DOIs and PMIDs.
  • Tick the papers to get.
  • Check the pace settings, then start.
  • Open any paper marked Open it yourself.
Choose where the papers are. A drug monitor lists the ones marked Get.
The three steps are also the live progress: free copies, your access, left for you.

The desktop app is on the Microsoft Store, and on the Applications page. The extension sends page content only to your own desktop app.

When it waits for your browser

If the browser doesn't answer, the app shows a guide. Switch to your browser. It starts by itself. If the toolbar button isn't there, click the puzzle piece and pin Abstractus Connector.

The guide draws the toolbar and marks the button to click.

Pace and limits

Papers open one at a time. You set the seconds between papers and the papers per publisher each day. Papers past the daily number are skipped until tomorrow.

Select Settings to set the pace and the daily number.
SettingValue
Seconds between papers20 by default, at least 10
Papers per publisher each day100 by default, from 1 to 500
Papers per run500

Checks and warnings

Sign-ins and publisher checks are yours. If a publisher shows a check, the paper is marked Publisher check. Open it yourself. We never solve it for you.

A publisher check is left for you. Select Open, then finish the check.

If a publisher sends a warning, we stop asking that publisher. Its other papers are left for you to open yourself.

Open Details on any paper to see what happened to it.

Details shows the reason, the publisher and the final page.

Where downloads go

In the desktop app, exports and PDFs are saved to your Downloads folder. A note appears with Open and Show in folder.
